It was so amazing to papers carpeted with a press release from the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM), yelling loudly on a full page podium that it could ‘facilitate constructive
engagement’ between youths and President Bingu wa Mutharika after the July 20 saga. This is so welcome, coming at a time when mother Malawi is still in fresh tears after losing a chunk of youngsters to government forces during the 20/7 demonstrations. Now this council rightly said the senior Mutharika has ‘invited us time and again to make a call on him should we have concerns on any areas we would like to discuss with him and we are, therefore asking you… to set the agenda and we shall facilitate the meeting’…but the question is, how many discussions on issues has the President been engaged in that have bore the desired fruits for the majority of Malawians?
Isn’t this the same President who pleads for discussions only to scoff at the partakers later? Truly, our Mutharika is onrecord to have said you cannot bite the finger that feeds you directly implying that once appointed under his authority, you’re bound to trade within his parameters. Now where does the Council get the stamina to strike objectivity in its approach if it was appointed by him? Search me.
Theories are good, theories are sound but suffice to say, practicals are delicious.
Had it been for theories, Malawi should have been way advanced economically, politically, socially… swagging its pride on the colourful dreams of a majestic Nsanje Metropolitan City with its multibillion dollar inland port anchoring it all. Not long ago, the same government wanted to dissolve the Council completely at the peril of over 130 youth organisations, thereby rendering its prominence and performance to zero.It is high time, the Council repositions to ably respond to the modern demands, realities, and trends in the youth development sector.
